In this mode, the input signal is heard during recording and when the transport is stopped, but is muted during playback, so that you can hear previously recorded audio on the track in question. (This has obvious uses when you want to drop into a previously recorded take.) However, if the input signal is being independently routed to the outputs, as it is when you employ the Profire 2626s cue mixer, neither of these monitoring modes is any help. When M-Audio joined the Avid group a few years back, it was widely assumed that their product range would sit beneath that of their new siblings Digidesign. Since then, however, theyve produced one or two pieces of kit that must have raised eyebrows at Digi HQ. The Project Mix IO, for example, was more than a match for Digis 002, despite costing little more than half as much, and a quick glance at the spec of the new Profire 2626 suggests that they might have done it again. For M Audio Profire 2626 Mac Or PCWith eight mic preamps built in, a sophisticated DSP cue mixer, and a comprehensive array of digital IO, it offers all you need to record a typical band to your Mac or PC, and the UK retail price is a mere 479. To put that into perspective, Digidesigns 003 Rack still officially retails at 834, despite lacking four of the Profires mic preamps and eight channels of its ADAT digital IO. Admittedly, Profire buyers also need to fork out for their recording software of choice, but it still looks like a very cost-effective way of putting together a multi-channel recording rig and if your recording software of choice is Pro Tools, the M-Powered version offers almost all the functionality of Pro Tools LE. Nor are M-Audio conceding any ground in terms of sound quality. In hosts that support it, you can record 24-bit audio at up to 192kHz, provided you accept the usual reductions in channel count associated with using ADAT IO at high sample rates. The Octane preamps in the Profire are said to offer excellent quality and a larger-than-usual gain range, while so-called JetPLL technology is claimed to eliminate jitter in a critically acclaimed fashion. Where do M-Audio find critics who spend their time acclaiming jitter elimination technologies) Vital Statistics Firewire audio MIDI interface Compatible with: Mac OS 10.4.10 and later, Windows XP SP2 and later, Vista. For M Audio Profire 2626 Plus Two FrontBuilt-in mic preamps: eight, plus two front-panel high-impedance instrument jacks. Other IO: word clock, MIDI, optical SPDIF (shares optical port with ADAT). Getting Kitted Out The Profire control panel software is a departure from previous M-Audio designs, and is centred around the ability to configure its built-in DSP mixer for low-latency monitoring. With all the digital IO connected, a total of 26 mono inputs and outputs are available to recording software (eight analogue, 16 ADAT, two co-axial SPDIF). These signals can be sent in varying amounts to up to seven different stereo aux sends, so if you have an additional eight-channel D-A converter, you can create seven different low-latency cue mixes for performers on top of the control room mix. Only one aux is available at sample rates above 96kHz, though.). As well as the aux sends, the cue mixer offers the usual level faders, pan, mute and solo controls, but theres no EQ or other signal processing, so if your singer wants to hear reverb on his or her voice, youll have to swallow the latency and set up a monitor mix within your recording application. Not that thats too much of a hardship: as youd expect from a company who have been developing audio interfaces for many years, the Profires drivers handled low-latency operation very well indeed in the review system. The two front-panel headphone outputs are hard-wired to analogue output pairs 12 and 34 respectively, and one feature that will be familiar to users of other M-Audio products like the Firewire 1814 is the Master Volume knob. This operates in the digital domain, and the control panel is used to choose which outputs are affected by it. The Profire can also operate as a stand-alone device when not connected to a computer, and the control panel allows you to configure settings for this mode, too. Profire Pro Tools Considering the close relationship between M-Audio and Digidesign, I was disappointed to find that Pro Tools M-Powered is somewhat the poor relation when it comes to software partners for the Profire. Sample rates above 96kHz arent supported, which probably wont bother many users, but you also lose the second pair of ADAT ports, bringing the total IO count down to 18. And, although you can still hear input signals with near-zero latency via the Profires DSP mixer, if you choose to do so youll spend a lot of time muting and unmuting tracks within Pro Tools. For a long time, Pro Tools has offered two input monitoring modes: Input Only monitoring, where you always hear the input signal, regardless of any audio that might have been previously recorded on a track, and Auto Input monitoring. In this mode, the input signal is heard during recording and when the transport is stopped, but is muted during playback, so that you can hear previously recorded audio on the track in question. This has obvious uses when you want to drop into a previously recorded take.) However, if the input signal is being independently routed to the outputs, as it is when you employ the Profire 2626s cue mixer, neither of these monitoring modes is any help.
